The petals of each dahlia are gathered to create a three dimensional quilt. Surrounding the Star Dahlias is a Log Cabin pattern. Here is a Star Dahlia Amish quilt in shades of blue. We have two and as we’ve said in the description of the sister quilt (in grays), we have never before seen this quilt pattern. The fabric is pretty, with fresh and lively splashes of color. The gathered “petals” of the Star Dahlias give the quilt a 3-dimensional quality. This Barn Raising is extra special – always the choice of fabrics makes the quilt. Equally important is the piecing and the quilting. This Log Cabin is perfectly pieced. The quilting is in the ditch and amazing – precise, tiny stitches. Have a look at the fabrics. Some are novelty fabrics: stars and lightning, and, they are used so well. The Courthouse Steps quilt pattern is another variation of a Log Cabin. The red paisley material has been cut into logs. The resulting texture is thick and lush! Such an incredible work: the black logs run perpendicular to the red logs, and, they are so perfectly locked into the red logs. Do the black logs recede? Or do they float on the red? A large king size quilt for a king size bed. We love this quilt!

This pattern, Courthouse Steps, is a variation on a traditional Log Cabin pattern. The black fabric is patterned and the white fabric is shadow patterned, and, there are pops of burgundy. So instead of a very modern looking quilt, we have a quilt that is delicate and rich like an older quilt while it also retains the austerity of a contemporary quilt. Unusual, beautiful, brilliant. This quilt is for a king size bed.

The Log Cabin is among the most versatile of quilt patterns and this Log Cabin Barn Raising variation is a perfect example. The maker strategically pieced the “logs” of fabric to create a radiating pattern. She used a wide array of print fabrics for the colorful “logs” all of which are hand quilted. Also included is a second pattern: the maker pieced rows of Maple Leaves between the Log Cabin rows. (Item 2151)
