Amish Quilt for Sale Courthouse Steps Amish Quilt

Courthouse Steps Amish Quilt

A Courthouse Steps Amish quilt in bold contrasting colors!

The Courthouse Steps quilt pattern is a variation on a traditional Log Cabin. In the case of this quilt, the maker alternated blocks of paisley print fabrics with solids. All “logs” are quilted in the ditch. There is an enormous amount of hand quilting as a result. A wide black border is carries a hand quilted garland pattern. The contrasting colors of this quilt are particularly interesting and make this a versatile quilt. This quilt is one of our favorites (and we may keep it for ourselves!). A large king size quilt for a king size bed.

An Amish Quilt-like “Pay it Forward”

Thank you, thank you and thank you again!

We hope you’ll humor us as we write our second “we have the best customers on earth” post but really . . . we do.  We have met the most interesting, kindest, friendliest and sincere people since we began this mission of bringing Amish Quilt art to as many folks as we can.

Living in the northeast, we spent the last two days anxiously anticipating the big blizzard and accompanying 30 inches of snow – which thankfully did not materialize.   Another of our clients lives further north and is experiencing the same weather pattern so we were happy to hear from her yesterday.  Even happier to see the photo attached to her email.

We met Nancy and Tom over the summer when we stayed at their bed and breakfast, Best Kept Secret B and B. Nancy also owns and operates a custom sewing business, Tom Cat Designs.  As you can imagine, there was much to talk about . . . and we did . . . talk a lot!  We learned that the Double Wedding Ring Quilt pattern was Nancy’s favorite quilt pattern.

A few months after we returned from our vacation we left again for Amish country and low and behold, we picked up a Double Wedding ring quilt and of course, forwarded photos to Nancy and Tom.  Nancy immediately purchased it and uses it in one of the guest rooms in their bed and breakfast. Yesterday, we received this photo of Gandolf the Cat luxuriating on what looks like he has assumed is his very own Amish quilt!  Thanks again Nancy and Tom!

Just before the holidays, a package arrived from Jan.  In it we found the two bags you see in the photo.  We love Jan!  This is our second set of bags from her.  She makes them and sells them via her on line store Aurora Light Design.  Really versatile bags with mesh bottoms – which is great for use at the beach (keeps us from dragging half the sand into the car with us).  This time we were so excited to see the name of our company on one of them – Jan’s idea was that if we carry around a bag with “Amish Spirit” written on it, we can sell more Amish quilts to more people.  At the very least, start a conversation about Amish quilts.  We think Jan is great – and so are these bags!

We put a yoga mat into each bag so that you can see get the general idea of the size and overall capacity of each bag. She also kindly made a second bag by pulling Facebook photos of our family pets.  Really really ingenious don’t you think?

Best sure to check out her Etsy shop HERE.  Jan makes many beautiful things.  These useful and attractive bags are just one example.

A big Amish Spirit-ed Thank You!

Amish Quilts Testimonials (from our amazing clients)

While we’ve been in the business of selling Amish quilts for a short two years, we have had the good fortune to meet some of the kindest, most genuine people who truly make us happy and grateful to have undertaken this journey.  We often tell people that we have the very best, nicest and smartest clients in the world, and, from all over the world.  Here are a few unsolicited comments.  When you read them we’re sure you’ll agree: Amish Spirit clients are just the best!

From Janice M.: The handmade one-of-a-kind quilt is lovely, and a perfect wedding gift for my son and his bride. The couple was overwhelmed by the beauty and symbolism incorporated in its design.  Thank you for helping make this happen for the newlyweds!

From Cathy S. (who purchased one crib quilt, then a second the following day): This is so precious and beautiful, I couldn’t give it away . . . . had to order another one for my baby grandson! Wow. What a rare handmade treasure! This one stays with Grandma!

From Jan M.: I feel so fortunate to have found your website and to have seen the quilt that I did. With your help I was able to give the gift I have always wanted to give to my son but lacked the talent and the time to make on my own.

From Franciene L: I’ve only just begun looking for a quilt for our bed.  I do so many different types of handwork: knit, crochet, sew, embroider, tat.  So, I appreciate the nature of it: women’s work passed from woman to woman, generation to generation. I stumbled upon your website this morning and honestly, would be honored to have any one of your quilts in my home.  They are stunning.  The work, the connection and the beauty they offer is overwhelmingly beautiful. Your quilts stand out dramatically.

From Victoria L.: Thank you for sending such an amazingly beautiful quilt! I have always heard that the Amish put one mistake in a quilt on purpose.  This must be folklore because my quilt is flawless! We absolutely love it. We appreciate you both so much.

From Jan O.: As humans, we have been blessed with some “Greats” . . . . Michelangelo, Mozart, Jonas Salk, Einstein, Lindt Chocolate . . . and now Amish Spirit Quilts. The baby quilt I bought is just phenomenal. The colors are superbly soft and mellow, making a quiet but undeniable statement.  Then there’s the quilting . . . . neat, consistent small stitches throughout create additional designs while emphasizing the patterns on top of the quilt. It’s unlike any I have ever seen – store bought or handmade. This baby quilt is so light weight it seems it should float but is generously warm and cuddly. It’s a delightful work of art.  In fact, the back of the quilt has a sleeve for hanging so it can be used when outgrown.  I can be persnickety and rather demanding when purchasing items and I have to say that this infant quilt far exceeded my expectations.  What a pleasure this little quilt is.  It’s going to be very hard for me to give it up!

Everyone here truly appreciates all of our clients and we thank you for taking this journey with us.  Wishing you all much happiness, good health and peace in 2015!

Amish Quilts Are Art – You Bet!

As subscribers to Antiques and the Arts Weekly, we were happy and more than a little surprised to see a Baltimore Album Quilt at the top of the front page as part of the article “Reassessing the Revival.”  Growing up in a family of quilters, we have always considered textiles – in particular quilts – to be art.  Not crafts, but real art.  The article references interesting textile shows and books that all bring to mind the question: why aren’t quilt makers and textile designers taken more seriously?

Could it be that the makers of this art are primarily women?  Is it because this art form is practical and usable?  Or possibly the “make do” characteristic of some quilts (think of quilts made of left overs, dress fabrics, etc.)?  We clearly are not the only ones considering this question.  Every few years there is a new show, another article, a new book that discusses the artistic value of quilts.

Many of the Amish Quilts we sell are of traditional patterns.  They are treasured old quilt patterns that are handed down from generation to generation.  We are always surprised to see, in these very old patterns, reflections of truly contemporary art.  Below are two images: a close up of our 9 Patch Postage Stamp and a typical Mondrian image.  You can view additional images of Piet Mondrian’s work via this Artsy link.  We see so many quilts in his work! What do you think??
