Our Amish Spin Star (or Star Spin) is heavily hand quilted. The maker created the central star medallion, as well as all of the other stars and sash work in this quilt, using a wide array of rich print fabrics. This blanket is a mix of vintage and contemporary components. Purchased at an estate sale in New Milford, CT in the 1980’s we believe the fabrics are from the 1960’s. We love the muted, soft colors – especially since we no longer see them in today’s quilts. The quilt top was sewn together by hand and we felt it would be a shame to not finish it, making it into the contemporary quilt it deserves to be. We used a high loft batting, a soft pale blue cotton fabric for the back and added hanging loop and then hand quilted it into existence.
The result is a cozy, warm blanket (or throw) – great for napping. There is also a hanging sleeve sewn onto the back of the throw should you prefer to hang it on a wall. We love it!

The central star of our Lone Star quilt pattern is created by sewing together hundreds of small diamond-shaped pieces of fabric. Look closely at the diamond shapes used to create the central star and you’ll see that all four sides of each diamond has been hand quilted. The maker also heavily hand quilted the open spaces of this quilt with a variety of patterns including twists, feathers and geometric designs. (Item 2027)

We believe this beautiful quilt describes the journey of those seeking to escape slavery by traveling to and reaching the northern states and beyond into Canada.
In the middle of the quilt burns a traditional 8-pointed Amish star: a star of faith, conviction and courage. In order to avoid detection and recapture, escapees had to travel at night. They relied upon the stars to point the way north, as represented by the stars that ring the quilt. After the inner Amish star is the pattern Drunkard’s Path which represents the evasive maneuvers taken to avoid detection. Like the rivers and streams followed by escapees, the Drunkards Path is meandering and winding. The border you see is specific to this pattern and not seen in any other quilt. This is a strong, beautiful Amish textile. (Item 2171)

This variation on a Broken Star quilt pattern is sometimes called a Fan Star. It’s the first we’ve had in many years. The maker used an array of print and solid fabrics and pieced them from dark to light to dark again. The quilt’s light background both contrasts and compliments the pattern and the fabrics. The Moonglow is an outrageously difficult quilt to make and as such, we had one artist who was adept at and loved making this Jinny Beyer design. When she retired from making this very popular quilt a few years ago we never thought we’d find someone else who was able to make such a complex quilt. The new maker is definitely up to the task. Her quilt is a masterpiece made with a blend of Jinny Beyer and other quilt grade cottons. Her color selection is a mix of muted blues, purples and greens over a black shadow pattern fabric. Her border stands out just as much as the star medallions. In between her sash work, she pieced together a modified fence rail pattern using the fabrics that make up the stars. Stars are pieced, not appliqued. And for lovers of quilts, here’s an interesting tidbit: the maker did NOT paper piece this quilt!
