Tumbling Blocks Amish Quilt
Look around and you’ll see very few Tumbling Blocks quilts. It’s a very difficult pattern to piece and it’s time consuming to quilt. For the sides of the blocks of this quilt, the maker chose two complimentary fabrics: a green and blue batik print and a blue, green, black and red traditional floral print. She contrasted these rich colors by using a pale sage print for the tops of each block. The combination of her fabric and color choices with this old traditional pattern make this a contemporary and versatile quilt. She pieced this quilt the way it should be: our detail photos show that the tops of each “block” are true diamonds. Typically, quilters utilize the faster, easier method of two sewn-together triangles to make that top diamond shape (or block “top”). It takes tremendous skill to sew these diamonds to the blocks’ sides without puckering the corners. The artist hand quilted every side of every diamond of every block!
