A Vintage African American Quilt Incorporated into a Finished Amish Quilt
This quilt is one of a kind. It is almost certainly an African America quilt top. It is all made of super-soft cotton. Because this top was going to be a quilt for a “hired man” it was small – for a “hired man’s” bed, and they were very small. Because of the fabrics, we date the central portion of this quilt’s top to the 1920’s or 1930’s. The Amish made this vintage African American quilt top into the larger quilt you see here. They added new sash work, binding, batting, backing and of course, hand quilting. This quilt is an eye massage. It sings. It is colorful and at the same time, calming. Remember, a quilt can be a blanket or a bed spread. Here, you see it on a king size bed.
